Data Analyst

TargetSmart seeks a Data Analyst to work within the Data Team of the Research Solutions department (aka “The Polling Team”) for a full-time, seasonal position (2024 election cycle). The Data Analyst is responsible for a variety of data processing, quality control, and reporting processes to support the public opinion research work of the team. This role involves the creation and auditing of polling results reports, reviewing R code, Excel data sheets, and/or Athena/SQL queries. The Data Analyst reports to the Deputy Director of Research Solutions – Data, and collaborates closely with the team to address quality control requirements, process polling data, generate reports, and assist with voter file data extraction and the creation of counts and survey quotas. This role is an all-hands position, requiring flexibility and a willingness to support the team as needed. Comprehensive training is offered as part of the onboarding process.

As part of the interviewing process, you will be asked to audit toplines and to do some simple cleaning in R.

Reporting Duties:   

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Deputy Director of RS – Data, Data Team and Analysis Team to understand and fulfill reporting and quality control requests.
  • Quality Control of Data and Code: Ensure accuracy and integrity of data and code in R.
  • Quality Control of Reporting Deliverables: Conduct thorough reviews of reporting deliverables (toplines, FIQ, crosstabs, and time series).
  • Data Processing in R: Utilize R software for cleaning and processing survey data using our proprietary system to produce polling results deliverables for clients.

Voterfile Data Extraction and Quotas Duties (as needed): 

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Deputy Director of RS – Data, Data Team and Analysis Team to understand and fulfill voterfile data extraction and quality control tasks using R.
  • Quality Control of Athena Queries and Counts/Quotas: Perform rigorous quality checks of Athena queries and Excel sheets to ensure their reliability and correctness.
  • Data Extraction in Athena and Data Processing in R: Extract data using Athena and produce counts tables, followed by cleaning and processing in R to generate quotas sheets using our new legacy system.

Other Duties : 

  • Perform quality control of other Data Team products, as needed.
  • Attend client meetings/conference calls as needed.
  • Learning new software and skills, as needed.

Requirements

Skills and Qualifications:   

  • Commitment to Democratic candidates and the progressive movement.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and work extended hours during the height of campaign season, including some weekend work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and be a team player.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite of products, R or similar language (Stata, SPSS, SAS, Python), SQL or Athena.
  • A good understanding of political polling and/or research methods.

Nice to Have Skills:  

  • Political campaign experience or coursework, a past internship, or professional experience working on polling and/or research methods.
  • Experience working with data manipulation.
  • Advanced experience with R as a programming language or VBA.
