Virginia: Early voting surpasses 417,000 votes
Virginia has recorded 417,159 early and absentee votes, including 264,741 early in-person votes and 152,418 absentee votes as of October 8. Since October 2, the total has increased by more than 137,000 votes, or 49.3%.
The early vote electorate is also more diverse at this point than in previous cycles. Hispanic/Latino voters account for 6.23% of votes cast, up 4.15 percentage points from 2022, while the number of Asian or Pacific Islander voters has more than doubled from 8,423 in 2022 to 19,175 this year.
Advertising is active across several Virginia congressional districts as voting continues. AdImpact data compiled by Cook Political Report shows approximately $5.4 million in general-election advertising in VA-01 and $5.1 million in VA-02.
Minnesota: Early and absentee voting is accelerating
Minnesota has recorded 98,260 votes so far. Since October 2, that total has surged by 47,716 votes, a 94.4% increase in just six days.
Absentee ballots are driving much of that growth, increasing 113.4% since October 2, compared with a 68.9% increase in early in-person voting. The composition of the electorate is changing as well. Voters under 40 who have already cast ballots are 9.1 percentage points more Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC) than at the same point in 2022, while the overall early and absentee electorate is 11.4% BIPOC compared with 5.3% in 2022.
Voting by mail or in person has been available in Minnesota since September 18, giving campaigns a growing pool of voters who can be identified as having already cast their ballots.
